Idiots!

The cheaper, dumb, ones are controllable from the serial port with
standard software and a simple cable. They do document this (somewhere I
have a manual).
There are several packages listed in the UPS-HOWTO (often in
/usr/doc/HOWTO) to talk to smart APC:

  apcupsd-2.8.tar.gz
  apcd-0.5.tar.gz
  smupsd-0.9-1.i386.rpm
  genpower-1.0.1.tgz
and some for Best:
  checkups.tar
  bestups-0.9.tar.gz

though I concur that the HOWTO also says "BEST fully documents the smart
mode" etc.

(Alpha Power - Burnaby, I think - make some nice larger units. I got one
going on Irix (no "shutdown -k" :-( ) powering 2 SGIs, an NT, and scads
of SCSI disks, tapes etc. True sine wave, 5kW or something. Actually, I
shouldn't boast too much as it's not
working quite right, but with dozens of users running lots of jobs,
tinkering with the UPS is not too popular...)
