I couldn't resist going to London Drugs and buying a Packard Bell
MultiMedia 880C. Bought 64 meg SDRAM, 300 mHz Cyrix MII processor,
16.8 gig IBM hard disk. Comes with 32x CDROM and Integrated Sis 5598
Graphics (whatever that is, is it supported under XF86?) Supposed
to be stereo Soundblaster Compatable. Standard serial port(singular)
parallel port, and PS/2 mouse. Also contains a 56K V.90 modem which
the salesman assures me is NOT a winmodem. Bundled with 3.5 gig disk preloaded full of
MicroCrap WinBlows 98 stuff - and no they won't nuke the software for a
rebate - grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Hell, they won't even remove the 3.5 gig disk.
I guess I will have some fun with Partition Magic 4.0 - sure glad I bought
the program, and oh yes, my US$15 rebate cheque finally arrived...

My next crazy idea if I can't get David Michelson's donated monitor to work,
is to buy a monitor and two ethernet cards, and see if I can get the two
computers talking to each other over a local area network, better than
running Telix under MS-DOS on the Packard-Bell and using the serial line...

Re Memorex media: You will be happy to know that I verify ALL discs that
I duplicate for people, so if there is a defect, you won't get shafted
with a coaster. Jerome slipped through the net because he was in a hurry
and I didn't have time to verify his Memorex disc (which WAS defective). I
have since loaned Jerome my Walnut Creek Slackware 3.6 originals and burned
him a Kodak Digital Science 100-year-lifespan CD he can keep (I want the
Slackware 3.6 back, it is the "official" release from Walnut Creek, not Cheap*Bytes)
