Is it a Winmodem? If so, you don't stand a chance. if it actually appears
as a serial port then yes, you should be able to get Linux to recognize it.
I got a winmodem in my new Cyrix MII 300 mHz PackardBell 880C The salesman
swore up and down it wasn't a winmodem, but it takes up a PCI slot and seems
to only work under Windoze 98...
