The term "Winmodem" means a a modem who's functions are implemented partly
in software, or completely in software.

However, the USR Winmodem is also a trademark of 3com, which is what the
salesman thought you were referring to. He is right. It isn't a
Winmodem, but there's no chance in hell you'll get it working with linux.

Since it was a packaged system, I very much well doubt you can bring it
back(just the modem).

There is only *one* PCI modem that in any way supports linux, and thats
because the company wrote the drivers.

Buyer beware. Never buy your computers at a department store.
