Hi, all.

The results of the survey are very encouraging. There is obviously lots
of interest in the proposed course. Virtually everyone wants a full-day
event with 45-minute sessions. Our *working* date for this: Saturday,
October 23, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Place: TBD. Preregistration will be
required.

We'll announce final details after we've recruited all our instructors.
We have good candidates for presenting the material on Unix shell,
Emacs, RCS, Make, and gprof. However, I'm still looking for experts
to present the chapters on

  * gcc,
  * libraries, and,
  * gdb.

Since the seven instructors are going to expend a fair amount of effort
to prepare and polish their presentations, we'll likely offer them a
small honorarium to thank them for their efforts. Also, people will
almost certainly want paper copies of the instructors' presentations.
Accordingly, we'll probably have to charge a *modest* fee for the course
in order to cover these expenses.

We'll also consider arranging for a bulk purchase of O'Reilly's
"Programming with GNU Software" so that we can offer it to attendees at
a 20% discount off the MSRP.

If this course works out, we may plan a similar full-day course on
TCP/IP networking and router configuration in the spring.
