Ever advertise to the world just how dumb you can be then realise what you've
done?
I solved the problem, and it was right under my nose, and was mentioned in an
earlier post to boot: port numbering.

The dev got renumbered to lp0. So I changed the printcap, and... Voila! All
sorts of things being spit out by my printer (forgot to flush the queue).
Funny though, this doesn't explain why the printtool wouldn't detect the port
a while back... probably had a module unloaded at the time and forgot as I
panicked... anyway..
Thanks to all who helped.
