It's time for another plug for Brunix. You can decide for yourself
whether it's 'similar'.

To subscribe to the mailing list (it's low-volume), send mail to:

    <majordomo@lists.bortnak.com>

with the following command in the body of the message:

    subscribe brunix

You will get back the usual administrative information, and something
like:

Brunix has no charter, no administration and little
or no organization. (We like it that way damnit!)

Brunix meets on the second Wednesday of every
month at a mutually agreed upon eating establishment.
At a Brunix meeting, we drink beer, have some good
eats and forbid tape recorders. If you want to know
where the next meeting will be held you'll just have
    to subscribe to this list.

So.... see you there .... or not!

The August meeting was at the Steamworks Brewing Co. Here is an informal
summary of the proceedings:

Afterwards...

for those that didn't show up - and the 15 or so that did but can't remember
what went on ;)

The opinion of Richard Chadderton and Gerry Toon is that the framboise ale
is habit forming - 9%, slightly rose colored, and served in a fairly large
wine glass - it made for an interesting contrast with the rest of the table's
main choice Nut Brown.

A couple of the newer Brunixians (Max Brand and Mikey Cillis) enjoyed the
blazing repartee, even though most of the people there have been in
computers about double their combined ages.

Discussions ranged from the latest round of automaticly invokable e-mail
virus problems in Windoze, and whether the problems could be attibutable to
malice or stupidity, to whether pocket protectors and coke-bottle glasses
constituted barriers to propagation of intelligence in the human community.
(a shirt with no breast pocket was deemed a fertility symbol in geekdom)

Further discussion was on whether there exist software engineers anywhere at
the M$ campus and what should be done with them in light of some (all) of the
failings of the various operating system offerings there.

The gathering broke up just before sunset - since Lawrence, Ted and I had
time to saunter up to Canada Place and watch the sunset ceremony on the
fantail of the USS Tarawa docked there. Previous discussion had centered on
whose navy it belonged to since when Bruce and I were coming into the
restaurant, all we could see was a couple of Canadian flags on it.

All in all, a very successful gathering.

Next time we should really get someone to actually make a reservation. Of
course this might break with tradition, but it also might make it a little
less likely that the meeting will have to be held around a hot-dog vendor's
cart with a complete lack of pottables.

Speaking of a break in tradition, Richard Chadderton seems to have been
reading up on his Robert's Rules - and actually called for a motion to
adjourn, and a vote! It passed (fortunately, or maybe some of us would still
be there sampling the various beers ;>

Next month is September - and the second Wednesday is the 8th. There should
be no reason for anyone not to attend - summer's over so no holidays, lots
of warning, lots of time to discuss venue, etc.

Let's see if we can get a really large group together. Maybe the whole room
at the Szechuan, or the Oyster Bar at the Steam Works (I know, it's a
repeat, but...) or suggestions???? (but please, no rubber chicken)

Over to you, the best damned bunch of geeks (and hangers-on) around...

richard
