LINUX AND OPEN SOURCE EVENTS IN VANCOUVER
Mon, Sep 20 - Sat, Oct 2, 1999

There's no doubt about it: Linux and Open Source are big news these days
and people want to know more. A series of special Linux and Open Source
events will be held in Vancouver between Monday, September 20 and
Saturday, October 2, 1999 to help people become more familiar with this
exciting approach to software development and its implications.

These events are being hosted by the Vancouver Linux Users Group, the
Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) - Vancouver
Section, the Centre for Integrated Computer Systems Research (CICSR) at
UBC, and the BC Technology Industries Association (BCTIA). They
highlight the increasingly important role that Linux
and Open Source software are playing in the new economy.

On Monday, September 20, the IEEE Commmunications Society (Vancouver
Section) and the Vancouver Linux Users Group will host a presentation on
"Inside "Inside Rogers@Home: The Evolution of Hybrid Fibre Coax Networks" by
Dean Patterson of Rogers Cablesystems. Time: 7:30 - 9:00 pm. Place:
BCIT, Bldg SE6 - BC Tel Theatre. Free Admission.

On Thursday, September 23, UBC/CICSR and the Vancouver Linux Users Group
will host a presentation on "Freedomware: The GNU/Linux System and the
Free Software Movement" by Richard Stallman of the Free Software
Foundation. Time: 4:00 - 5:30 pm. Place: UBC, Woodward Instructional
Resources Centre (2194 Health Sciences Mall) - Lecture Hall 2. This
event is part of the CICSR Distinguished Lecture Program. Free
Admission.

On Thursday, September 23, the BC Technology Industries Association will
hold their Annual General Meeting at the Renaissance Hotel Vancouver,
1133 West Hastings St. from 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Tim O'Reilly, founder
and president of O'Reilly & Associates will speak on the Open Source
movement. Admission: $49.22 for BCTIA members, $64.20 for non-members
(GST included).

On Friday, September 24, the Vancouver Linux Users Group and the IEEE
Student Branch at UBC will host a presentation on "Business Models for
Linux and Open Source" by Tim O'Reilly, founder and president of
O'Reilly & Associates. Time: 8:00 - 9:00 am. Place: UBC, Student Union
Building - Room 212A. Free Admission.

On Saturday, October 2, 1999, the Vancouver Linux Users Group, the IEEE
Student Branch at UBC, and the UBC Amateur Radio Society will host
LinuxFest '99. This event will include demonstrations and displays of
Linux software, door prizes, a Linux installfest, and presentations on a
variety of Linux and Open Source topics by industry experts. Time:
10:00 am - 4:00 pm. Place: UBC, Student Union Building - Rooms 205,
207, 209, and 212A. Free Admission.
