PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release Fri, Sep 10, 1999
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
LINUXFEST'99 FOR BOTH NEW AND EXPERIENCED USERS
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
On Saturday, October 2, 1999, the Vancouver Linux Users Group will host
LinuxFest'99 in the Student Union Building at the University of British
Columbia. The event, which will run from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm in Rooms
205, 207, 209, and 212A, will feature displays, demonstrations,
presentations, and prices. Admission is free and open to all.
"The main objective of LinuxFest is to let people know that there is a
strong Linux and Open Source community in Vancouver," said Dave
Michelson, one of the event organizers. "While most people have heard
of Linux, a surprising number have never actually seen Linux running on
a PC. Many are curious and just need a little encouragement to give it a
try. Others have been running Linux for a while but aren't yet aware of
the support and opportunities that are available through the local user
community. LinuxFest '99 is designed with both these groups in mind."
LinuxFest '99 is really three events in one. In the display and
demonstration area (SUB 207/209), visitors can see Linux in action and
meet the Linux community in Vancouver. Users, consultants, developers,
scientists and engineers, and vendors are all represented. In the
installation area (SUB 205), visitors who pre-register can have an
experienced Linux user guide them through the task of installing Linux
on their PC. In the presentation area (SUB 212A), visitors can listen
to presentations by local and industry experts on topics ranging from
"How to Install Linux" to a discussion of how Linux (and UNIX) are being
used in High Energy Physics research at Triumf and elsewhere.
