Hi, all.
The MathWorks has jumped on board as a supporter of the Linux in Science
and Engineering booth at LinuxFest '99.
They'll be sending us some promotional items, a demo copy of "MATLAB for
Linux" for use at the show, and a full copy of "MATLAB for Linux" as a
giveaway. But, rather than give it away strictly by random chance (it's
a rather expensive and specialized product), we'll ask interested people
fill out a survey form and explain what they would do with the product
if they were to win it. We'll select the best responses, and then draw
from those. We'll then send all the completed surveys (and the name of
the winner) back to the MathWorks so they can determine how useful the
effort was.
I expect to hear from a few more vendors shortly.
Petar Knezevich <pknezevi@chml.ubc.ca> is doing a great job of
organizing and staffing the booth. He and one of his colleagues will be
bringing in a Celeron machine with Scilab and XPVM, and a 486/66DX with
Octave/Gnuplot, respectively. We'll probably install Maple on one
machine and point out that it's available at the Bookstore (for
students) for only $99.95 (Mac, Win, and Linux versions in one box.)
However, we need to sign up more volunteers to staff the booth, answer
questions, take names for followup, etc.
(Each shift will be quite short so that the volunteers will have plenty
of time to see the rest of the event, attend presentations, and help
with InstallFest.)
If you're interested, please contact Petar as soon as possible.
