Umm.. I'm (on a haitus) one of the tech guys at Intergate, and .. err.. who
told you that you lose your ip when you turn off your adsl modem? I'll have
to talk to them ;-) hehe.. Nah..
the ip is assigned by a (somewhat broken, but we can't do anything about
that because it's handled by bctel) dhcp server. The server remembers your
ethernet hardware address, and assigns the ip based on that. The IP block
for adsl (as far as i can tell) is HUGE, and so the chance of there being a
collission with another ADSL customer (meaning ALL the IPs were assigned,
and the DHCP server was forced to give the person YOUR ip) is VERY slim.
I've noticed that the ADSL dhcp server will assign *two* ip's per hardware
address -- if you find this happening when you restart your computer, (or
bring down the ethX interface), try: bringing down the interface again, and
then restarting it.. (basically what you're doing is telling pump or dhcpcd
to release and renew the lease -- the equivalent operation in windows is to
load up winipcfg and release then renew all...) that should give you the
desired (more or less static) ip..
... Just a comment on the static IPs that intergate is assigning; these IPs
must come out of intergate's own IP block -- bctel has nothing to do with
them. I'm not sure how the administrative details are being managed (ie, how
intergate is getting access to the bctac dhcp server), but i might be able
to find out... ;-)
