My experience is that this is often caused by bad memory, though that's
not the only cause.

Which memory use? Linux will happily use all of the memory you give it
beyond what it needs for buffer cache. The only time I've ever got much
free memory on any of my systems is after exiting a big app such as
Netscape before the system fills it back up again.
