The 50x refers to 50x the original CDROM transfer rate of 150 kbytes/s (so
7.5 Mbytes/s in this case).
My new 40x is louder than my nearly-silent (but old and flaky, alas) 6x
drive, but I don't find it overly intrusive. But then, I mostly use it for
installing software or playing music (where it's running silently at 1x
anyways).
