I have had good luck with my $100 AOpen IDE 40x drive. It boasts on the
box about high speed DAE, and is very quiet. Bought it at Bestop Computers,
on Cambie near corner Cambie and King Edward. Yes, I also make MP3s
(with a LEGAL mp3 encoder which cost $300 from Fraunhofer Inst. in Germany)
under Linux, and use the freeware program CDPARANOIA for doing the actual
rip under Linux. I prefer to listen to MP3s through my high quality
boom box hooked up to the computer than to my $60 CD-player... I can't
detect any loss in quality of the MP3's vs genuine CD's played on the
same machine via WorkBone. MP3's take up one heck of a lot less disk space
(even though I have two 16.8 gig IBM "deskstar" 16GP's on each machine).
Anyhow, Vanlug has my high quality machines for their Installfest, so I
am reduced to listening through Certified Data speakers (definitely not
as good as my Boom Boxen) or using my CD player.
ps: Can't believe the prices being quoted for memory nowadays...
