Uggh, this resulted in my first solid lockup with linux

I shut down xawtv and restarted it without the -v and I got the black screen
with sound again, so I shut it down and restarted it with the -v switch, but
it was black again..... weird

then I shutdown the terminal window I had started it from and found I was
unable to close the TV window, tried logging out and the machine locked up at
the "preparing session" notification. DPMS is still working and I still get
sound, any idea how I get out of this without cycling the power?
