As I understand it the 10/100 hubs are implemented as a 10Mbps hub and a
100Mbps hub with a simple switch between the two hubs. Presumably it
autodetects when you plug in and routes your data to the appropriate
hub.

Whatever gives you the idea it doesn't? All I ever see when I sniff my
ADSL link is ARP traffic and some netbios stuff -- all broadcast.
Sounds like a switch to me.
