As Harondel mentioned, the best place to start is with the HOWTO, which
you'll likely find at /usr/doc/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO. It has been a
while since I installed my CD-RW so I can't remember whether or not you
will _have_ to recompile your kernel. I know I did and unless you are
already running the latest kernel this might be a good time to upgrade
anyway.
Let me know if you get stuck along the way and I can help you with it.
If I remember correctly the HOWTO was a little vague in places.
