Since this has been brought up, I thought i would let the list know
about another option for getting rid of older computer hardware. I along
with several other VanLug members, work with a group called Tao
Communications here in Vancouver. Amongst other things, we are currently
working with others to provide computer access to grassroots
organizations and individuals in Vancouver who would otherwise not be
fortunate enough to have it. Below is a letter which explains a little
of what we do. If you are interested in making a donation or finding out
more about Tao, you can email me or check out our web site at
http://vancouver.tao.ca/

We are currently in great need of 72pin ram and hard drives.

Thanks,
ron collins

Regarding: Potential donation of computers
From: TAO Communications Vacouver

We are writing to request your support for our grassroots efforts through
the possible donation of computers that would otherwise be surplussed. Our
organization operates mainly in the east side of Vancouver and
promotes skills sharing and development through the development of
workshops, learning labs and training sessions. We are currently working
together on putting together a "media lab" that would help us to
facilitate some of the work that we are trying to do.

Part of the goal of the media lab would be to create a public access space
where members of the community without computer/internet access would be
able to come to not only use community-shared machines to access email and
do job-searches, update resumes and personal files - but also to gain
training in both Windows and Linux environments at free or little cost.
Some examples of training that we would like to provide everything from
the basic (the Microsoft Office Suite for example) to the more esoteric
(How to run your own linux server, how to blend creativity and computer
use, etc.)

Many of our members are computer professionals who have vast amounts of
experience that they are willing to volunteer to see such a project happen
in Vancouver's east side, a traditionally disenfranchised community that
lacks many of the basic resources that other communities are able to
financially support. We operate, as well, on the ethic of recycling old
and "unusable" boxes and turning them back into tools that communities can
use. So far, we have put several machines (mostly refurbished 486es) into
the hands of community members and organizations in need.

We are also looking to government agencies and other corporations for
support in developing the future of this project. Any donations of
computer hardware and/or software would be appreciated as the media lab
project is without a doubt our largest and most challenging yet.

If you have any further questions about this project, or our
organization, please feel free to phone me at 251-2657, or email us at
vancouver@tao.ca.

Thanks very much for taking the time to consider our request.
