Hello,

I am trying to monitor traffic on my firewall using 'tcpdump' (homepage:
http://www.it.kth.se/edu/gru/Internet/tcpdump.html), however I am having
trouble getting it to create a file that is readable. Here is the syntax I
am using:

tcpdump -i eth0 -w /var/log/eth0dump (... being run as 'root')

This does generate a file in /var/log called 'eth0dump', but it is
completely illegible in any text editor - all that is in the file is
seemingly random, garbage, characters, but if I chose not to output to a
file, only parsed to the screen, everything is fine.

Does anyone have some insight as to what I am doing wrong, or how I can fix
this?

Thanks in advance,

Lance Couture
