Hi, all.
While I'm certainly much in favour of honest self evaluation, I believe
that some in the group are being a bit too negative and perhaps even a
bit unrealistic.
Did our presence at COMDEX run like clockwork? Not a chance. But,
we've brought several new people with outstanding skills and great ideas
into the fold and have laid some important groundwork for future events.
Moreover, we've identified several key issues concerning the future of
the group (not just our presence at COMDEX) that should be addressed at
a special steering committee meeting (open to all interested parties) to
be held later this month.
All in all, I believe that our presence at COMDEX this year was, in
fact, very successful. Let's look at *some* of the very positive
contributions and results, many of which represent a major step forward
compared to last year:
1. We signed up almost 500 new members and have been invited to
participate in COMDEX Vancouver (its new name) again next year.
2. Rich McIntyre, Alex Harford, Bill McGrath, Simon deWeerdt, Moon Hee
Han, and Wayne Scott did a great job of preparing the very sharp posters
that were prominently displayed at the booth. With suitable changes,
these poster designs can likely be adapted for use in future events. ***
3. Chris Boutilier and the UBC Bookstore did a great job of printing up
the posters in large format. Moreover, he promised to have posters for
future events drymounted on foamboard, provided we give him enough lead
time. One can't ask for much more than that! ***
4. Ryan Land (with input and advice from Christian McCormack, Ben Holt,
and others) did a wonderful job of producing the VanLUG/RedHat 7.0a
CD's. Wayne Scott did a great job printing up VanLUG membership cards
and business cards. (Big improvement over last year!) ***
5. Simon deWeerdt, Moon Hee Han, Bill McGrath, and Ken Cillis did a
great job of setting up the booth. Ken Cillis, Ken Moren, David Kolke,
and Christian McCormack did a great job of organizing the volunteer
staff and overseeing the booth and presentation area.
6. Larry Hunkin and Casey Milligan from Multimedia Technologies did a
great job of supporting our membership drive. MM Technologies' offer of
future support is also very much appreciated. Christian McCormack and
Bill McGrath did a great job of filling in when the Linux office demo
failed to materialize. Our many booth volunteers (Harondel Sibble, Alex
Harford, Bill McGrath, Jonathan Walther, Tyler Delane, Reza Roboubi,
Hatem Abouhassan, Yakov Miles, Mark Link, and many, many others) did a
wonderful job of answering questions and lending a strong presence.
7. Christian McCormack and Harondel Sibble built upon the efforts of
Nicole Morissette in setting up a very effective speakers program on the
show floor. Richard Vickery, Brian "Ingy" Ingerson, Brian Edmonds,
Stephanie Lummis, Reza Ruboubi, Trent Mick, and others graciously
contributed their time and efforts. We also had a strong speakers
presence at the COMDEX conference, thanks to the efforts of Rob Slade,
Michael Peddemors, Bill Gibbens, and Dee-Ann LeBlanc. ***
8. Joe Usubiaga did his usual great job as treasurer. Bruce Balden did
his usual outstanding job as COMDEX liaison. Since we've been invited
to return next year, we have a great opportunity to make our next
showing absolutely perfect ;-)
(If I've missed anyone or their contributions, please let me know.)
