I've talked to Bruce, and he was unaware of the vanlug-announce list
(currently featuring 27 subscribers). We've now got vanlug.announce set
up as a moderated group gated from the vanlug-announce mailing list.

I've created this at news.gweep.bc.ca as well[1], and Bruce and I will
be feeding each other. Also available are vanlug.general, which is
currently set up as a moderated gateway of the vanlug mailing list,
vanlug.test if you need to do any test postings, and vanlug.config for
discussion of the development of the vanlug hierarchy.

This brings up an interesting question of whether or not it would be
desirable to move the vanlug list(s) as a whole over to a news backend
from the current mail infrastructure. Who on the list would have
trouble with this, especially given the ability of Netscape and some
other news readers to read from multiple servers? Would it be of use to
people to keep a digest format mailing of the newsgroup postings?

Note that these groups are not currently available at your regular ISP
news servers, and it would be a matter of discussion for vanlug.config
to decide how widely they should propagate. My preference would be to
keep them limited to a few local servers only to avoid problems with
spam and such, and allow easier software solutions when the inevitable
abuse starts to leak in.

Brian.

[1] People already reading gweep.linux.vanlug there should switch over
to vanlug.general, as I will shortly remove the old gated group.
