I'm pleased to announce, that with a bit of hacking this morning,
gatewaying is now operational in both directions between the VanLUG
mailing list and the vanlug.general newsgroup. The mailing list will
continue operation as usual, but those both with capable newsreaders and
a desire to interact with the VanLUG list purely in a newsgroup format
may now do so.

The hierarchy is currently available at two sites. The primary site is
news.gweep.bc.ca, and it is open for reading and posting by all. It is
also being fed to news.cs.ubc.ca, but that site is only open to members
of the UBC Computer Science department. News admins at other servers
are welcome to contact me to discuss additional feeds.

Additional newsgroups in the hierarchy at this time are:

 vanlug.announce
A moderated newsgroup, which is gated one way from the
vanlug-announce mailing list. All announcement should continue to be
posted via that mailing list. Unlike the mailing list setup, where
announcements show up on the vanlug list as well, they will not be
   crossposted to vanlug.general.

 vanlug.comdex99
An open newsgroup for discussion of the involvement of VanLUG at
Comdex '99. This is not currently gated back into the vanlug list,
but if the list subscribers do not mind, and feel a need for the
extra traffic, it certainly could be.

 vanlug.config
An open newsgroup for the discussion of the layout of the vanlug.*
hierarchy. New groups should be proposed here. I see no reason to
gate this group back into the mailing list.

 vanlug.test
For test postings. Please do not make test posts to other groups.
This group also is not gated into the mailing list.

Hopefully now unless there are serious questions about this setup that
need to be dealt with in a public forum, we can get away from admin
threads and back to Linux discussions. Feel free to email me privately
with any questions or problems, of course.

Brian.
