AGENDA
19:00 - 19:30 Getting Started with PERL
Jay Thorne
So, you've heard about PERL, want to learn it, but would
like some background so things will be a bit familiar when
you start reading about it. In this fast-paced
presentation, Jay will review the philosophy behind PERL,
explain how PERL can replace traditional UNIX tools like
/bin/sh, sed, awk, and even C, describe typical PERL
applications, use example code to show how PERL scripts are
put together, review things to look for when you're learning
and reading about PERL, and offer his recommendations for
PERL books and websites.
19:30 - 19:50 VanLUG News and Announcements
Dave Michelson
Vancouver Computes! claims that VanLUG is the hottest user
group in town. It sure seems that way! Preparations for
COMDEX/Canada West are proceeding smoothly. We're preparing
to incorporate VanLUG under the BC Societies Act. And we're
about to introduce the VanLUG Discount Card which will earn
VanLUG members valuable discounts at participating
retailers. More details at the meeting!
19:50 - 20:00 SuSE Office Suite '99
Dave Scott
Dave will present a brief review of SuSE's Linux Office
Suite '99 which includes Applixware 4.4.1, SuSE Fax, the KDE
desktop, the GIMP image processing tool, the ADABAS D
Personal Edition SQL database, and much more.
20:00 - 20:55 Internet Access Using NICS
Dana Epp
The Linux-based NICS server from Netmaster Networking
Solutions is a simple turn key system for bridging a
corporate intranet or extranet to the Internet. Internet
Connection Types include choice of Modem, ISDN, Frame Relay,
T1/Fractional T1, E1 (Europe), or Ethernet connections to
your Internet Service Provider. Web-based graphical
administration tools can be securely accessed by any
computer on the local network. Dial-on Demand automatically
establishes and breaks the Internet connection as required
in order to minimize connection costs. And NICS supports
every popular Internet Application including www, ftp,
telnet, mail, NetMeeting, RealAudio, etc. (NICS will be
among the products featured at the Linux in BC booth at
COMDEX/Canada West next month.)
20:55 - 21:00 The *Other* Man in the Red Hat ;-)
Bill Gillespie
Our friends at Red Hat Software have donated several door
prizes for our last meeting before Christmas, including a
copy of Official Red Hat Linux 5.2. You can't win without a
Door Prize ticket! Contact Bill at the meeting for all the
details!
