Agenda
VanLUG News and Announcements Dave Michelson

Our booth at COMDEX/Canada West was a tremendous success!
We've already been asked to coordinate a Linux Pavilion at
COMDEX next year. Now it's time to move forward with
incorporation under the BC Societies Act, preparations
for the Linux presentation to UBC Computer Science students
on 25 Feb 1999, planning for InstallFest III, and other
projects.
The Edge Router Project Richard Pitt

The 7/24 service provided by @Home and ADSL is very
convenient, but it also exposes one to a big security risk.
With the addition of 2 inexpensive ethernet cards and
FirePlug's Linux-based Edge Router software, an older
PC with just a 3 1/2" floppy and 12-16 MB of RAM can be
used to isolate your internal network from the "Bad Uglys"
out there on the Internet. In addition, it takes all the
work out of getting and using the DHCP address your ISP gives
you while doling out its own pool of addresses to your internal
systems so you can have more than one computer on the 'net
despite the single address the ISP gives you.
Inside DHCP Brian Edmonds
The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) simplifies the
task of assigning IP addresses to clients. How is DHCP related
to BOOTP? How does DHCP actually work? How will DHCP likely
evolve in the future? Answers to all these questions and more....
Roundtable: @Home vs. ADSL Bill Gillespie
VanLUG members have accumulated an enormous amount of experience
and expertise with the @Home and ASDL services provided by
Rogers and BC Tel, respectively. Here, the group will share their
thoughts on the merits of each system and tips for newcomers.
