                  Demonstrations: CICSR Atrium, 2 - 3 pm

Presentations in CICSR 208

1. Installing Linux on PC hardware - Tom Jarecki and Derek Barber

The key to a successful Linux installation is knowing one's hardware. A
careful inventory conducted prior to starting the installation process
can mean the difference between glowing success and utter frustration.
Once you learn how Linux expects a hard drive to be partitioned and what
it needs to know about your video card, monitor, and network card,
you'll be able to install Linux with ease.

2. Securing Your Linux PC - Brian Edmonds

Before you connect to ResNet, Before you connect to ResNet, Rogers@Home, ADSL, over even a dialup ISP,
you should take steps to secure your PC. With Linux, it's easy! Why
should you use ssh rather than telnet or rlogin? How can ssh make
remote X applications more secure? Which Internet services should one
disable and which are safe to leave active? This presentation will
provide answers to all these questions and more.

3. Using Linux - Raphael Wong

Can Linux really help you complete your programming assignments faster
and more easily? Sure! Linux puts the functionality of a UNIX
workstation, from /bin/sh and gcc to the X Window System, on your home
PC. Now you can avoid both the line-ups in the workstation labs while
avoiding the problems of porting your programs back and forth between
Solaris and Windows. Here's a quick look at the userland side of
Linux.
