The VanLUG steering committee will meet again on Wed, 7 April 1999 at
UBC in Brock Hall Annex Rm 362 from 7-9 pm. All are welcome, and in
fact, *encouraged* to attend and participate.

Issues:

The mailing list has just celebrated its fifth anniversary. We've been
holding monthly meetings for almost a year. Our request to be
incorporated as a non-profit society is about to be granted.

So what's next? In general, we need to get more people involved in
providing content for the monthly meetings and the web site, and to look
for a more accessible location for the monthly meetings.

* Monthly meetings - content.

VanLUG members are an incredibly well-connected lot. If you know of a
vendor, researcher, sys admin, or programmer who has an interesting
story to tell (or have one to tell yourself), please let me know. I
don't want to be the only person involved in finding guest speakers for
our monthly meetings! At the steering committee meeting, I'll lead a
discussion concerning the types of presentations that we should be
soliciting. Thanks for the ideas that have been contributed so far. If
you have any more ideas or contributions, please let me know.

* Monthly meetings - location.

I attended an IEEE Comsoc meeting at BCIT last night. The organizer
told me that "VanLUG is very lucky to be holding their meetings at UBC
where the parking is so much less of a hassle!" The new BC Tel Theatre
in the IBM Technology Centre (Bldg SE6) at BCIT *is* very nice.
However, I have no doubt that it's also very expensive to rent. One
possibility, assuming the majority of the group would like us to move
our meetings to BCIT, might be to have a BCIT student LUG book it (free
of charge?) and invite us to join them. Is there anyone from BCIT
interested in pursuing this?

Another possibility is SFU Harbour Centre. It's principal advantage is
being close to a SkyTrain connection. Once again, I have no doubt that
it's also very expensive to rent. One possibility, assuming the
majority of the group would like us to move our meetings to SFU Harbour
Centre, might be to have an SFU student LUG book it (free of charge?)
and invite us to join them. Is there anyone from SFU interested in
pursuing this?

* Web site.

As I know you all agree, Ryan Land <rland@icsnet.ca> and Lee Haslett
<lhaslett@pobox.com> have done a great job with the architecture and
infrastructure. As we move on to the next step, Jeff Brooks
<jsbrooks@home.com> has volunteered to be the point of contact
concerning local content. At the steering committee meeting, he'll lead
a discussion concerning the types of local content that we should be
soliciting. If you have ideas or contributions, please let Jeff know.

* VanLUG in the mail order business?

With the apparent demise of Linux-Canada, providing a mail-order service
for Linux products within Canada seems to be a niche waiting to be
filled. Should VanLUG move to fill it? At the steering committee
meeting, Bill Gillespie <bill@gillespie.bc.ca> will lead a discussion on
the procs and cons of pursuing this. If you have ideas or thoughts
about this, please let Bill know.

* Administrivia.

Once we're incorporated, we'll have to maintain a membership list,
financial statements, and such. At the steering committee meeting, Ken
Moren <kmoren@rogers.wave.ca> and Joe Usubiaga <kambo@digital-rain.com>
will review their progress in meeting these requirements.

Thanks.
