Congratulations to Marcos Bernaldez and BCIT LUG for hosting a very
successful InstallFest today. About 30 people attended, including many
students from the Computing Systems Technology program at BCIT and
several VanLUG members. It was the first time that I had seen Open
Linux 2.2 and LIZARD (Linux Installation wiZARD), the new X-based
installation utility. In a few words: Very nice! They were also
installing Red Hat 6.0 and a few other variants.
I was interested to learn that a few of the second year options in the
CST program (Client/Server Computing and Data Communications) already
have a strong Linux/UNIX component. Marcos reiterated that the CST
program head is quite willing to sponsor VanLUG/BCIT LUG meetings and
events at BCIT. Joint weekend activities and events are a logical place
to start.
I also met Eric from the Greater Vancouver Venture Centre in Burnaby.
They are a non-profit society sponsored by various government agencies
that aims to help people develop entrepreneurial skills and start
successful small businesses. Many of the participants in their various
courses and programs are interested in Linux for small business because
it's potentially cheaper and more reliable than the alternatives. A few
VanLUG people (e.g., Derek Barber) are already helping GVVC get up to
speed with Linux, but more help is always welcome.
